Just because a pattern has been established --

I've spent a lot of time looking at the lattice
of lines on my hand: crow foot, leaf stem, street map.
I've spent a lot of time
cataloging the textures of asphalt:
rock, glass, quartz. I've spent
a lot of time trying to identify
the colors of sand: wheat, rust, moccasin.
I've even studied tiles in bathrooms -- as
if squares were the art form and as if
the crud growing between the squares
were the mind growing itself plaque.

Just because a pattern begins --
