Louise Robertson

With a bunch of publications and awards she started accumulating in college, Louise Robertson came out of dorm room-, page-, and academic-poetry traditions to spend the last several years negotiating the space between page and performance poetry and the areas where they overlap.

Robertson lives, raises her kids, works, and is involved in the poetry scene in Central Ohio.

Robertson's publication credits include many small press journals (including a feature set of 6 poems in the Jan. 2011 Pudding Magazine), a couple anthologies, one chapbook produced by a reading series, and a law school newspaper. Additionally, Pudding House Publications published her chapbook Teaching My Daughter My Language.

She runs Rewriting Ovid Publications, a very small press with a growing set of high quality authors

Personal projects include (but are not limited to) creating a chapbook every month for two years (2006-2008) and a CD due to be release late 2011.

She features regularly at venues in the Eastern time zone, but has been invited west a few times.

A passionate advocate for the presences of live poetry, she has organized and helped organize poetry events for the past few years in the following capacities:

Oct 2011 - Present - host and organizer of the Writers' Block show First Draft, a poetry dedicated to new $hit -- or at unperformed $hit. This poetry night is the night where everyone from the feature poet to the last open mic reader must rise to the challenge of creating an all-new show.
2011 - Host City Chair for the Women of the World Poetry Slam (WOWps).
2010 - 2011- Marketing Director for the Women of the World Poetry Slam
2009-2010 (and beyond?) - Produced and hosted the Columbus, Ohio, Page Meets Stage
2008-Present - Webmaster for the Women of the World Poetry Slam and back up Webmaster for the Individual World Poetry Slam (iWPS) and, occassionally, Webmaster for the National Poetry Slam.
2005-Present - Marketing and web presence for the Columbus-based poetry night, Writers' Block Poetry

Robertson's awards include, more recently, the 2009 and 2007 Columbus Arts Festival poetry award after having placed 3rd in the 2006 Columbus Arts Festival competition. She also placed 2nd in the 2006 William Redding contest. She won an honorable mention in the 2005 contest from Perigee.

Her most prestigious academic award was the 1992 Mary Roberts Rinehart award. She took 3rd in the 1991 Virginia Downs competition. She also received the Mary Cotton Fellowship and a general academic fellowship while getting her MFA.

You'll notice the dates above are split and that is because she wasn’t writing from 1993 to 2003, during which time she got a career, had two children, and grew up a little.

Robertson holds a BA from Oberlin College and an MFA from George Mason University.
