04/25/2007 Archived Entry: Poetry Day

Yesterday was a good day for poetry.

1. Drive to Dayton early to deliver the Rose M. Smith to read as one of the invited poets to open for Patricia Smith at Wright State.
2. Watch Rose deliver an awesome performance of "Go Tell Mary Not to Weep".
3. Watch Patricia Smith's awesome feature. She is a great poet.
4. Indian food with the Rose M. Smith, the Joanna Schroeder, and the Gina Blaurock. Great food, great conversation.
5. MPSL bout against Detroit and Dayton. Loved Dayton's venue even with the funky acousitics.

Recordkeeping:
Gina did "Bitches" in the 4 minute.
Vernell did "Skinny Girl" in the first 3 minute.
Donielle did "Feet" in the second 3 minute.
Donielle and I did "Ritual" in the first 2 minute.
Corey Borders did "The Word" in the second 2 minute.
I did "My Father Is Not" in the 1 minute.

A great time was had. We tied for 2nd, but I think the crowd really dug all of us. Some smoozing after. I admit to banner-envy of Jy Obadele's PicNap poetry banner. I make a point to re-shake Patricia Smith's hand (she came to the slam!) and make sure she realizes I was the one who wrote that blog entry, you know the one. Maybe I should have kept my head down, but I didn't think it fair not to point it out. Quick ride home. Great day of poetry comes to a close.
