10/23/2006 Archived Entry: Peripatetic Poets Sum Up

Scott Woods and I got great vibes at last night's night. The room was packed and the event went well. In the open mic everyone represented themselves well. Really well. Thank you all for coming out.

When I got there, they asked if I'd known we were asked to offer a poem for their reading series chapbook. I had not, could I take the evening to pick something? Could I? Could I? Joanna, here's my big purple folder of acceptable material and many copies, could you pick something? While I read, she picked just about the most perfect poem to hand in. It was good, nay publishable, but it had fallen off my publishing radar. And I don't read it much. And little did Joanna know I'd planned to read it last in my set.

My set list:

Dance of My Forefathers
Windows
Eve's Curse
Sin-Eater
Terri Schiavo's Heaven
Helen to the Sea
Teaching My Daughter My Language
Asparagus
You Know That Woman
Locust Pods
Woodsman (for Scott Woods)

I started off nervous and feeling blind with nerves like I do. Then I started watching the faces in the crowd. Great faces. I sold enough chapbooks for babysitting money on Tuesday. I always like that reading. They are closest to my base-line aestetic which includes not only the literary, but also the personal, the emotional, the strange, and the moving. In other words, they've read Paul Celan.

Scott's feature went over fantastically. He is always a marvel, but this is especially true when you get to hear his work stack up into something even greater.

No, thank you for turning us all on to a new reading series. You and Scott were both amazing, and I think everyone in the room was completely impressed with the quality of work and the level of performance that you two delivered.

Regarding your purple binder that is approximately the size and weight of the Manhattan Phone Directory, it should only take 1-2 sessions of intense physical therapy for me to recover feeling in my arms.

Thank you, Joanna.

And thank you for going through the poems. The poem request came out of nowhere and, with trying to think about what all has been submitted and what all has made it to my chapbook series, I was spinning around.

I really wish I could have seen you feature. I'm jealous of everyone else who is posting about last night. :(

Ah, not everyone could make it. There was so much going on this week -- you just can't go to everything. I'm trying, but after Wednesday I don't know.

Glad it went well. I'm interested to check it out on a Sunday evening. It will be just a couple of miles from the new (old) house. You have me intrigued about the audience.

It's every 4th Sunday and suspended in the summer months. I usually try to go, but miss it more than I would like.
