04/24/2004 Archived Entry: Everything went fine - Feature Sum Up

Everything went fine at my little featured reading last night at Writers Block. My great friend Bob came. (Yes, he's another UUNET/WorldCom/MCI friend -- my former Indian food lunch friend and a real hottie 'cause he's so sweet as well as dark haired, etc.) And I was glad to see him. (Hey Lauri and Laura -- where were you? All the no parking signs get you down? ;-)

I lingered afterward to talk to Mary Kim (exquisite and astounding poet) and profusely thank Vernell Bristow and Scott Woods just for being there. Their mission, as it were, is to provide a welcome place for all, not just those thought "worthy" -- I'd guessed that already.

I performed pretty well, I think. I got some good advice from an accomplished poet (above cited Mary Kim) which told me several things -- not only should I practice, but I think my new stuff is going over better than my old stuff. I'm pleased to hear that. So I have now laid to rest, in my mind, the poems from my earliest heydey -- except Helen to the Sea and the Laurel Tree, the two best, despite the fact that Penelope won actual cash. I can move on. Mission accomplished. New mission begun.

I should add that I'm insanely tired. Not only did I go out last night and linger long hopped up on an iced latte, but then I stayed up to talk with James, then I couldn't sleep and read the rest of Al Franken's Lies and the Lying Liars who Tell Them (fodder for another post), then Carrie gets up and requests escort to our bed which I provide although I refused to go downstairs for a particular bicky (blanky), then I was also up twice with a restless Andy who had the lack of good sense to wake up at 5:00 AM fully alert and asking for "milk" (he's got that word down completely) and "book" (he's got that word down completely too). James played the martyr as usual but this time I was all guilty for leaving after Andy went to sleep so feel no resentment. I usually get morning duties anyway. And for those who think I'm complaining -- I am, but James does plenty.

In fact, that's a small part of why I do work. Otherwise he would let me do most of the kid stuff. He agrees he doesn't want to spend all his life at work so he and I both work and we're both parents. That's the way we want it.
