04/21/2004 Archived Entry: Push comes to shove: economy vs environment

So here I have in front of me the article Government Exempts Nissan From Fuel Rule . I wouldn't think I'd be so torn. Of course I want there to be more American jobs. Of course I want car companies to meet fuel efficiency rules -- heck I want them to do better than that.

Don't these quotes make it sound like blackmail?

"Nissan had said without the exception it might move production of one of its U.S.-produced vehicles overseas. NHTSA determined such a move would cost hundreds of U.S. jobs because American suppliers would lose business."

"'We are pleased that NHTSA has granted our petition,' Nissan said in a statement released Tuesday. 'Nissan can now continue its current expansion in the U.S.'"

And what do the US automakers think, aye? It'll hurt them? Is this the first step to eliminating the enforcement of the rule (which is for foreign automakers)?
